Most commonly found in adults, gum disease affects people of all ages. Gum disease is described as swelling, infection or soreness of the tissues that support the teeth. Screening for gum disease forms a vital part of your routine dental examinations.

It may be hard to detect in the early stages, which is why many poeple may not be aware of having gum disease. In the later stages of gum disease, it may escalate to become worse, if left untreated. Symptoms of more advanced gum disease are inflammation of the gums (Gingivitis) whereby the gums around the teeth turn red and swollen. Oftentimes, there is bleeding when they are brushed during cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

The root cause of all gum diseases is plaque. It is a film of bacteria that forms on the surface of the teeth and gums. Most of the bacteria in plaque are harmless, however, some have been proven to be the main cause of gum disease.

Unfortunately, gum disease worsens painlessly so it may be that you do not notice the severity of damage on your gums. The bacteria that make the gums sore could lead to gum abcesses and pus may even ooze from the teeth. The effects of gum disease are gum recession, bad breath (halitosis), early tooth loss, and if left untreated over many years, the bone supporting the teeth can be lost. However, these are the worst-case scenarios that could happen if you do not get it checked out. It is treatable by our dentists, the earlier you consult a dentist and treat it, the better.

There are many reasons for bleeding gums. It could be that the toothbrush you are using or your brushing is too harsh on the gums. Change to a soft-bristled toothbrush. If bleeding continues, it is best to go for a check-up and consult a dentist to find out if it could be a symptom of gum disease.
